VisualARQ includes a built-in IFC import and export plug-in, which makes it possible to exchange IFC 2x3 files between Rhino and other AEC software packages.

What is IFC ?

The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) file format is a standard way of exchanging objects in the building industry to reduce loss of information when transmitting files between different applications.

For more information see: www.buildingsmart.com

How does it work?

  • Export to IFC: go to the Rhino menu > File > Save As... and choose the IFC file format to save your document.
  • Import an IFC file: go to the Rhino menu > File > Open... and select an IFC file.

Where is IFC supported?

IFC is supported in most of the structural MEP and architectural software packages, and in many of the applications involved in building information modeling (BIM).

Here you can find a list of software products supporting IFC:

What kind of information does VisualARQ export to IFC format?

The current version of IFC Export exports Walls, Beams, Columns, Doors, Windows, Openings, Slabs, Roofs, and Spaces from a VisualARQ model and all Rhino solids to an IFC 2×3 file. The following software applications have been used to test the generated IFC files:

  • Solibri Model Viewer
  • Revit Architecture 2011 (or later version)
  • AutoCAD® Architecture 2012 (or later version)
  • Graphisoft ArchiCAD 14 (or later version)
  • Tekla BIMsight 1.2 (or later version)

The IFC Tag

Since VisualARQ 1.9 version it is possible to assign properties to the objects when they are exported to IFC. These properties include a list of IFC types, and a Name, Descripion and Tag field.

From VisualARQ to Revit...

The following video shows how to export an architectural model (the Ville Savoye) created with Rhino and VisualARQ to .IFC format for Revit.

From VisualARQ to ArchiCAD

The following video shows how to export an architectural model (the Ville Savoye) created with Rhino and VisualARQ to .IFC format for ArchiCAD.

Does VisualARQ import IFC format files from other software packages?

Yes. VisualARQ 1.9 version can also import IFC files from other AEC software.

The following video shows the process to import an IFC file generated with Revit into Rhino:

BIM Features

Besides exporting models to IFC file format, VisualARQ is considered a BIM software because it works with parametric architectural objects and tools, thus making the design and documentation processes easier and faster. All project documentation (plans, sections, elevations, schedule tables for room areas, openings quantifications, etc.) is attached to the 3D model and updates automatically at any change on the 3D model.

But what is actually BIM?

In the following video you can see a clear explanation of what BIM means (Building Information Modeling), what it is used for and its advantages:
